NAMM 2020

Thursday, January 9th, 2020

Griego Mouthpieces will be going to NAMM in Anaheim California with mouthpiece kits. We are sharing booth space with Getzen Instrument Company, and Edwards Instrument Company.

Many of you know that I’ve worked at Getzen/Edwards the past 21 years and built mouthpieces at GSI on the side. Griego Sound Inventions is what GSI stands for if you’re interested.

It’s been a crazy 17 years of making mouthpieces and we’re still having fun. Drop by and test the new mouthpieces.

If you know that your local dealer is going and you cannot, ask them to drop by and see if they will stock some Griego Mouthpieces so you don’t have to become a dealer and get into NAMM.

Midwest Recovery Post

Monday, December 23rd, 2019

Chicago this time of year is tough.  It’s cold and the wind seems to tear through your body when you step outside.  We setup the booths on Tuesday morning starting after 8am and we’re normally done by 2pm.  We have people arriving all day and we get our schedules organized for the exhibit booth starting at 9am on Wed-Friday.

It’s not tough work per se, it’s more the standing on your feet and the constant barrage of sound hitting your ears that makes you exhausted.  Jonathan over in the Yamaha booth lost his voice from all of the yelling over the noise.  Personally my voice survived, but is still a bit ragged 3 days later.

There were a ton of people that visited our booth to try instruments and Griego Mouthpieces.  It was nice to hear people play and help them find mouthpieces that fit their instrument better than what they were on before the show.

Marshall Gilkes and I did a tongue and cheek video on how to test instruments at the event.  While it was meant to be funny, the more I thought about it I think it wasn’t all a joke.  You should play something articulate like la gazza ladra, something legato like rochut or bolero, and even Tuba Mirum.  Some people thought we were making fun of them, but it’s not, it’s making fun more of the environment and many interesting conversations we have.

You need to make sure your equipment can play these different styles so while our video was tongue and cheek, it may have been more serious than we meant it to be.    Hope everyone out there has a great and safe holiday season.  See you in January.

New Oft Mouthpieces

Tuesday, December 17th, 2019

Sometimes it takes me a while to get a new product up on the website. Part of it is that it takes time to get to the paypal buttons made, content written, and our webmaster updated to get all of the new products up.

The other side of the coin is that after developing a mouthpiece I want to make sure that it’s 100% ready and no changes need to be made before offering to you.

These Oft mouthpieces, for example , have been tested in BSO for the past year and we know they’re working the intended way. No alterations were needed for Toby on his last trip here. I know you don’t want to know all the details of manufacturing, but we do properly test all of our products in great length before putting them in the public eye.

Hope you love em.

Onward to 2020

Saturday, December 14th, 2019

We’ve been working on a few projects in 2019 and we’re launching them all here at the end of the year.

1. Toby Oft’s mouthpieces have proven themselves under the gun for the past year and so we’re letting them be available on our shopping cart, or through our dealer network that offers trial periods.

2. Brian Bowman mouthpieces are now available again from our dealers and on our online shopping cart.  We are excited to continue manufacturing this mouthpiece to the exacting standards the line is known for.

3. Alessi 6 series small shank are just now coming off the machine and will be available as well shortly. If not on our cart they will be available through our dealers/distributors. We will be working toward getting them on our shopping cart as well.

4. Our Cleaning rod that was light and small will be available again in January of 2020. Keep checking back on our website for all these updated products.

5. Classic Bousfield line, the Bousfield line will be offering a deeper cup for those that demand it. We will be shipping these in January to dealers/distributors everywhere around the world.

There’s a ton of things we’re working on still so make sure to keep in the loop by following us on the FB’s, and wherever else you can find us.

See you at Midwest next week if you’re going.

Ian Bousfield

Sunday, November 1st, 2015

In 2013 I developed the 4147-IB Tenor trombone with Ian Bousfield for Getzen Instrument Co. At the time Ian had been working on developing a mouthpiece line that had started before the instrument designwork.

Fast forward to 2015 and discussions were had about the possiblity of moving manufacturing to the USA with GSI LLC (Griego Sound Inventions LLC) and pushing the designs forward. This led me to work on his mouthpiece line.

There are many new creations that are going to be offered within his line of mouthpieces. The redesign brought new aspects that allow us to bring his complete approach to the forefront. From small changes to the outside of the mouthpiece to more drastic internal changes, the pieces play great.

We are working with our dealer/distributor network to make sure these are near you to test. If your local dealers do not have them, ask them to get them for you.

Where to Buy CS Models

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

The 5 CS, 1 CS, and 7 CS are designed around the Getzen Custom Series trombones. They do however work quite well on most trombones and I’ve been getting a lot of requests of “how do I purchase this model, because I can’t find them on your website?”.

These models are sold exclusively through Getzen dealers and you can order through your local Getzen Dealer. Please go here to find a dealer.

Griego Artist Series

Friday, November 30th, 2012

For the past year, I’ve been working with Gerry Pagano and Mark Hoelsher on a new bass trombone mouthpiece. On Gerry’s most recent trip, we were able to come up with something we’re proud to offer as my first Artist Series bass model.

This mouthpiece is very well balanced. I work with a lot of bass trombonists, so I’m quite sensitive to the needs of you guys. While we all love big bass trombone sounds, a bomastic low register usually equates to a wide-open, “false ringing” upper register. This piece addresses that with a big bass sound in the low register that also works great in the upper register. And it does that without being overly bright.

Now for the specs. This GP model has a 1.125″ cup diameter and a wide rim (1.595″). That’s a bit wider than a traditional Bach-like blank (1.555″). It’s not uber-wide, but it does allow for more contact than most bass mouthpieces. You’ll recognize the blank design as being the same as those from the Alessi line.

I’m intrigued by this model since it’s a departure from what I’ve produced in the past. I hope you enjoy the sound and feel as much as we do.

Next up in the Artist Series is a Steve Wiest jazz trombone mouthpiece, which is long overdue.

Griego-Ashton Trumpet Mouthpieces Shipping Soon

Friday, July 27th, 2012

Graham Ashton and I have worked together on Edwards trumpet development for a few years now. And since he has decades of experience designing mouthpieces, I thought he would be the perfect person to help me launch a Griego trumpet mouthpiece line. After two years of collaboration and testing, we are pleased to announce that mouthpieces will begin shipping next week.

I’m really proud of the results. The first thing people usually notice is the resonance. I think the color of sound with these mouthpieces is something special. There’s definitely a lot of character in the sound. And of course they’re free-blowing. Enjoy!
